Welcome back,
We hope you’ve been keeping warm if you’re in the cooler regions of Australia. I just wanted to share with you a little something about how and why I decided to put together the ‘Finance for Non-Finance Managers’ course.
I remember feeling inadequate at my first job because I didn’t understand the financial information I was looking at. It was embarrassing to admit that the finance terms seemed like they were in a language I’d never read before, despite having a degree that indicated that I should know what those terms meant.
Then when I moved from the private to public sector. That’s where I realised that we learn new languages, such as financial language, when we change roles and/or industries. The language in government finance was different to private sector accounting firms, for example, ‘appropriations’ was not a term I had previously been exposed to.
Over the years I have used this knowledge to help create courses to help people be more effective when they change roles and/or industries. One that I love to run, because it really would have helped me when I became a manager and had a team and budget to manage is Finance for Non-Finance Managers. It is for people who work in the public sector and who might be new to or just don’t fully understand their financial responsibilities including their financial reports. It is designed to help people feel confident about what their reports are saying and to help them identify what decisions and actions they need to take.
If that sounds like like you or like something you’d be interested in, we have a face-to-face course coming up in Canberra on 22 August and an online course on 10 September. I look forward to sharing what I learned with you during these sessions so you can feel confident with your financial responsibilities.
Until Next time,
